Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Project

Investment mapping along the Tour De France route through Yorkshire, summer 2014

Over 3,000 National Lottery grants have been awarded to projects in Yorkshire since April 1995, many of which are visible to those visiting the county for the start of the greatest cycle race - The Tour De France.

The projects HLF fund reach every crag and corner of the cycle route:

  • from the bustling metropolis of Leeds, through the breathtaking beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, to the historic grandeur of spa town Harrogate.
  • from the historic heart of York, through romantic Bronte Country, to the vibrant city of Sheffield.

HLF support has helped to stimulate a myriad of transformations across the county. From conserving a local church to revealing the untold stories of refugee communities; from opening up World Heritage Sites to protecting some of our most endangered species - the grant funded projects look after every part of our diverse heritage.

The mapping that follows highlight just a handful of our successful projects - a 'top 10' of interesting projects for each Stage of Le Tour, as well as spotlighting some of the heritage along the way.

A summary of investment along the stages of the cycle route is provided in the 2 side summary document, accessible in the graphic below:

'Buffer' mapping of the two stages through Yorkshire was undertaken, to analyse investment within 3, 5 and 10 miles of the routes. The map that follows illustrates the 3 mile buffer analysis of the entire route. Just under £220m of grant funding has been allocated to projects within the 3 mile buffer zone around the route, which equates to 49% of all Heritage Lottery grants allocated since April 1995 in Yorkshire.

In addition to buffer analysis of the entire route, the two stages of the race were split into approximate 40 mile segments, to dissect where HLF grant funding had taken place along the route.

In the examples that follow maps show grant location within 3 mile buffers of Stage 1 (5th July), from Leeds to Harrogate - with separate maps shown for each 40mile segment. NOTE: the accuracy of the investment statistics shown are reliant on the accuracy of the postcodes supplied by HLF for each project.
